The real danger of these bugs is the parasite that they can leave behind under the skin when they bite, causing a serious illness called Chagas disease. The disease starts with flu-like symptoms and progresses slowly but surely. A third of those infected then develop heart or gastrointestinal problems. Symptoms can include fever, fatigue, body aches, headaches, and swelling at the site of the bite. In the most severe cases, Chagas disease can be fatal. Unfortunately, there is no specific and effective treatment for this disease. The treatments that are available only have an 85% success rate, and only if administered immediately after the bite. This means that early detection and prompt intervention are crucial to improve the chances of recovery.
